On the Zambezi River, between Zambia and Zimbabwe
Victoria Falls
The Zambezi falling into a gorge you hear before you see.
Overview
About Victoria Falls
Victoria Falls is where the Zambezi River drops into a narrow gorge on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe. The spray rises so high it can be seen from far away, which gave the falls their local name, Mosi-oa-Tunya, the smoke that thunders.
The falls change through the year. From around March to May the river is in full flood and the curtain of water is at its most powerful, though the spray can hide the view. From September to December the water drops, the basalt cliffs show, and on the Zambian side you can swim in Devil's Pool at the very edge.
Beyond the walk along the falls there is a sunset cruise on the upper Zambezi, rafting in the gorge below, and Chobe National Park in Botswana about an hour and a half away.
Best time to go
Mar – May, Aug – Dec
March to May for the falls in full flood. August to December for clearer views, Devil's Pool and the best rafting.
