Namib-Naukluft National Park, southwest Namibia
Sossusvlei & Deadvlei
Red dunes and white clay pans in the oldest desert on earth.
Overview
About Sossusvlei & Deadvlei
In the Namib Desert in southwest Namibia, the dunes around Sossusvlei rise in shades of orange and red, among the tallest in the world. The light is at its best early in the morning and late in the afternoon, so days here start before sunrise.
Climbing Dune 45 or Big Daddy gives wide views over the dune sea. Nearby, Deadvlei is a white clay pan with dead camel thorn trees, black against the red dunes, that are many centuries old.
Desert-adapted oryx and springbok live in the area, and Sesriem Canyon is a short drive away. Sossusvlei is usually part of a road trip through Namibia that continues to Etosha.
Best time to go
