Ngorongoro Crater
A whole safari inside the walls of an old volcano.
Overview
About Ngorongoro Crater
The Ngorongoro Crater is the collapsed cone of an ancient volcano. Its steep walls hold a world of their own: open grassland, swamps, a soda lake and patches of forest, with wildlife that has little reason to leave.
A day on the crater floor can bring lions, buffalo, elephants, flamingos and, with luck, one of the black rhinos that live here. The descent and the view from the rim are part of the experience.
Best time to go
Jun – Oct, Dec – Feb
Wildlife stays in the crater all year. The dry months bring clearer roads; the green season is quieter.
