Northeast South Africa
Kruger National Park
Big Five country, from self-drive roads to private reserves.
Overview
About Kruger National Park
Kruger National Park in northeast South Africa is one of the largest wildlife areas on the continent, with lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino, and a road network that makes it easy to explore.
Along its western edge sit private reserves such as the Sabi Sand, which share open boundaries with the park. Lodges there can drive off-road and run night drives, which often means closer sightings of leopard and other cats.
Kruger is a short flight from Cape Town and Johannesburg, so it fits well with a few days in the city or the winelands.
Best time to go
May – Sep
The dry winter months, when the bush thins and animals gather near water. Mornings are cool, days are mild and the malaria risk is lower.
