Mount Kilimanjaro's snowy summit above the moorland

Northern Tanzania

Mount Kilimanjaro

Africa's highest mountain, climbed on foot.

Overview

About Mount Kilimanjaro

Kilimanjaro rises alone from the plains of northern Tanzania to 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa. It needs no ropes or climbing skills, just good fitness, time to acclimatise and an experienced mountain crew.

Climbs take six to nine days, and longer routes give your body more time to adjust to the altitude. Machame and Lemosho are popular, scenic routes; the path climbs through rainforest and moorland to a high desert and the glaciers at the summit.

Many climbers finish with a few days on safari in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro, or on the beaches of Zanzibar.

Best time to go

Jan – Mar, Jun – Oct

Tanzania's dry seasons give clearer skies and firmer trails. June to October is colder at night; January to March is a little warmer.
